How I learned to go big in BC.....
I want to go faster. A lot faster. And probably jump off a cliff or two . The
ability to confidently reach body-blurring speeds, I've come to accept is what
separates big-mountain acolytes from recreational skiers like me. And so I have
enrolled in a Rossland Mountain Adventures ski camp at Red Mountain , an unassuming
- though steep- BC resort just 10 minutes over the Washington border that each
season seems to be populated by more pro athletes. Such as Alison Gannett ,
full time free-skier, part time local , and my personal coach at this women's
only clinic.
" Don't think about me watching you" Gannett says, adjusting her goggles
over her brown braids. "Think about how much you rip "
Uh
Highly doubtful . considering that Gannett is holding a video camera. Her four
day program is to your traditional ski program what a Outward Bound is to sleep
away in the Cat Skills. It's exhilarating, ands it works . By day four I'm leading
my small group off lips and into chutes, including a double black diamond couloir
named Second Slides . Red Mountain is off the radar of most American skiers,
but with this kind of terrain, loads of snow- that's bound to change. As I launch
off the chute I almost wish someone was shooting video.(www.rosslandmtadventures.com)
- Kallee Thompson
Editor Note: Well actually someone was shooting, recording and editing- the video
of the camp is here
( High speed - 3.5 minutes)

The Valdez camp is one of a handful of clinics designed for the kind of girl who gets excited at the mere mention of words like couloir, cornice, and A-Star. Here are a few worth signing up for.
AJ Cargill's Clinic To Rip
Venue: Jackson Hole, Wyoming
The Skinny: This camp is about tackling steeps and catching air. Coach AJ Cargill
pushes self-reliance and fear management to get you there. The coaches rarely
stop, so beef up your quads before you go.
Coaches: AJ Cargill, Jessica Baker, Lexey Wauters, and Jamie MacIntosh.
Dates: January 11-12
The Damage: $260, includes instruction, lunches, video, demos, lifts, and awards
party.
411: 800-450-0477, jacksonhole.com
Rossland Rippin' Chicks Adventure
Venue: Red Mountain, British Columbia
The Skinny: "This ain't no five-star hand-holding camp," says coach
Alison Gannett. Experts learn extreme techniques like negotiating pillow lines
and dropping rocks and cornices. The less aggro groups cover bumps, steeps,
trees, crud, and powder.
Coaches: Alison Gannett, Aleisha Cline, Lee Ann Patterson, Kirsty Exner, and
Lisa Korthals.
Dates: February 7-9 and March 7-9
The Damage: $185, includes 2 days' lessons, lodging, lifts, meals, tuning clinic,
and video.

Babes in the Sierra Backcountry Ski Mountaineering Workshop
Venue: Mount Shasta, California
The Skinny: Open to chronic peak baggers and first-time climbers alike, this
multiday ski-mountaineering trip takes you up the second highest volcano (14,162
feet) in the U.S. Curriculum covers basic mountaineering skills, including ice
ax and crampon use, steep skiing techniques, and rope skills.
Coaches: Leslie Ross, Jen Carr, Justi Entenmann.
Dates: May 16-18
The Damage: $425, includes three days' instruction, cooking equipment and meals,
permits, and group camping gear. Mountaineering equipment not included.

Kim Reichhelm's Women's Ski Adventures
Venue: Chugach Mountains; Alyeska, Alaska
The Skinny: "It's heli skiing, so it's not for the meek," says Reichhelm.
"But the focus here is on powder skiing, not rappelling into some hairy
chute." Open to first-time heli-skiers as well as experienced sliders,
Reichhelm's AK camp with Chugach Powder Guides guarantees you 80,000 vertical
feet in a week. You'll ski glaciers and glades one day, treeless bowls and 3,000-foot
faces the next. When the bird's not flying, you go snowcat skiing.
Coaches: Kim Reichhelm and Lel Tone.
Dates: April 5-13
The Damage: $4,475 /$5,075 (double/single occupancy), includes 8 nights' lodging
at the five-star Alyeska Prince Hotel and 7 days' skiing, lunches, snowcat skiing,
and avy gear.

H20 Heli-Guides Women Ski Alaska Big Mountain Camp
Venue: Chugach Mountains; Valdez, Alaska
The Skinny: Designed for advanced and expert skiers and boarders, the curriculum
includes steeps training, slough management, route selection, avalanche skills,
self-arrest, and crevasse rescue. (For details, see main story.)
Coaches: Kristen Ulmer, Wendy Fisher, Alison Gannett, and guide Hilaree Nelson.
Dates: April 23-30
The Damage: $5,180 for a 6-day, 7-night package, including heli-skiing, food,
lodging, fat skis, avy gear, and down-day activities like ice-climbing, cat
skiing, and ski touring.
